Make a laser-cut map from any available place
Map Designer builds vector artwork from real-world geographic data. Search for a city, hometown, street, neighborhood, lake, river, coastline, landmark, or mountain, or enter latitude and longitude coordinates. Available roads, buildings, terrain, water, and points of interest depend on source coverage at the selected location. A GPX or KML track can be added as a route layer.
Choose the place and frame
Search a place or coordinates, pan and zoom the map, choose an aspect ratio and shape, or add a GPX or KML route.
Build the laser layers
Start from any preset, choose roads, water, terrain, buildings, or points of interest, then set each layer to Solid, Cut, Score, or the contour Engrave mode.
Preview, export, and assign operations
Inspect the SVG, remove small closed polygons if needed, download a combined SVG or layer ZIP, then confirm size and operations in your laser software.
Control the map before it reaches your laser
Choose the layers that belong in the design instead of tracing a screenshot. Presets provide useful starting configurations, while the editor lets you change the location, crop, layer order, colors, line widths, map detail, frame, and fabrication mode.
Worldwide place and coordinate search
Find a place by name or latitude and longitude, then pan, rotate, and zoom to the exact area you want.
Editable map feature layers
Choose and reorder roads, water, land, parks, buildings, boundaries, topography, bathymetry, routes, and points of interest.
Laser-specific output modes
Set ordinary layers to Solid, Cut, or Score. Topography and bathymetry also offer a filled-width Engrave mode for visible contour bands.
Shapes, frames, and large-format tiling
Clip maps to rectangles, circles, hearts, and other frames, add borders or mounting holes, and tile rectangular work at a chosen assembled size.
SVG preview and polygon cleanup
Preview the final vectors, hide layers, and remove small closed polygons from selected layers with an adjustable cleanup threshold.
Multiple fabrication outputs
Download combined or per-layer SVG, PNG for print, and STL or 3MF for solid 3D layers. The editor does not export DXF.
What is inside the layered SVG
The combined SVG keeps each non-empty export layer in a group carrying its layer name. The separate-layer ZIP writes each layer to its own SVG file. Output can include closed shapes and open linework; routes and score paths may remain open, and a street network can contain multiple paths rather than one automatically connected or welded path. If a construction needs one connected piece, use a suitable preset and inspect the vectors before cutting.
What the SVG contains
A combined SVG contains the visible map layers as named groups. If you prefer separate files, download the layer ZIP, which keeps each non-empty layer in its own SVG.
Closed, open, and connected paths
Exports can contain both closed shapes and open linework. Route and score geometry may be open, and a street network can contain multiple paths rather than one automatically connected or welded path.
Cut, score, engrave, and solid geometry
The layer mode changes the exported geometry: Cut creates outlines, Score creates thin linework, and Solid creates filled shapes. Contour Engrave creates filled bands with a chosen width. Assign the matching operation after import.
Scale, units, and bed sizing
The normal SVG uses numeric dimensions and a scalable viewBox without an explicit physical unit, so set and verify the intended size after import. Large-format tiling lets you enter the assembled size in millimetres or inches and includes A4 through 2A0 presets.
Cleanup before fabrication
The export preview can highlight and remove small closed polygons by layer and threshold. The normal workflow does not require retracing: inspect the result, confirm size and operations, then join or adjust geometry only when your construction, kerf, or material clearances require it.
Import into laser software
Map Designer SVG output has been verified with LightBurn, xTool Creative Space, and the Glowforge design workspace. Import the standard SVG, verify its physical size, then map colors or groups to the required cut, score, or engrave settings for your material. Map Designer does not export their native project formats.
SVG software compatibility
Map Designer SVGs have been verified with LightBurn, xTool Creative Space, and the Glowforge design workspace. These applications all import SVG, but the download is not a native .lbrn, .xcs, or Glowforge project and does not contain power, speed, material, or pass settings. Import the combined SVG or individual layer files, confirm the physical size, then assign the appropriate cut, score, or engrave operation for your machine and material.
Read the official SVG import guidance for LightBurn, xTool Creative Space, and Glowforge.
Available download formats
Export a combined SVG, a ZIP of separate layer SVG files, or PNG artwork for printing. Filled solid layers can also become STL or 3MF models for 3D printing; Cut, Score, and Engrave-only layers are not included as solid 3D bodies. Map Designer does not export DXF. CNC and 3D-print uses are available, but the primary laser workflow uses SVG.
What you can make
Start with laser-cut wall art, engraved keepsakes, or stacked relief maps. The same geographic project can also support selected CNC, print, and 3D-print workflows.
Layered city and hometown maps
Separate streets, water, parks, buildings, and a backplate for stacked wood or acrylic wall art.
Scored street engravings
Turn selected road and contour layers into thin score lines for signs, journals, coasters, and plaques.
Topographic mountain maps
Stack elevation contours into dramatic relief maps of peaks, parks, and trails.
Lake & river art
Carve lakes and rivers as depth-banded bathymetry for lake-house and cabin decor.
Routes and location keepsakes
Add a GPX or KML route and frame a race, trip, first date, proposal, or wedding location.
Large tiled wall maps
Split a rectangular map into rows and columns at a custom assembled size in millimetres or inches.

Map Designer FAQ
- What is Map Designer?
- Map Designer is an online laser map maker and layered SVG generator. Search for a place or coordinates, choose the map features you need, style each layer, and export vector artwork for laser cutting and engraving.
- Can I make a custom map of any city or location?
- You can search for places or latitude and longitude coordinates worldwide, then pan and zoom to a city, neighborhood, street, lake, coastline, or mountain area. Available roads, buildings, terrain, water, and points of interest depend on source coverage at that location. You can also add a route from a GPX or KML file.
- What file formats does Map Designer export?
- Map Designer exports a combined layered SVG or a ZIP of separate SVG layer files, plus PNG for print and STL or 3MF for solid 3D layers. DXF is not an export option. One map export unlocks the available formats for that saved map.
- How are layers and paths organized in the SVG?
- The combined SVG puts each non-empty export layer in a group that carries the layer name, and the layer ZIP provides one SVG file per layer. Depending on the source feature and selected output mode, the result can contain closed shapes or open linework. A road network can contain multiple paths rather than one automatically connected or welded path; join geometry in your laser software only when a project needs a single physical piece.
- Can I import the SVG into LightBurn, xTool Creative Space, or Glowforge?
- Map Designer SVG output has been verified with LightBurn, xTool Creative Space, and the Glowforge design workspace. This is format compatibility, not a native project file with machine settings. Confirm the physical size after import and assign the required cut, score, or engrave operation before running the job.
- Do I need an account to make a custom map?
- Yes. A free account unlocks the complete Map Designer, every public preset, saved projects, and 10 included map exports. You can purchase additional export packs or subscribe to Pro for unlimited exports.
- What can I make with a custom map?
- You can make layered city maps, scored street engravings, topographic relief maps, lake depth art, route keepsakes, ornaments, signs, coasters, and large tiled wall maps. The same project can also provide PNG artwork or solid layers for CNC and 3D-print workflows.
- How accurate is the lake bathymetry?
- Lake depth comes in two data sources you pick when adding a Bathymetry layer. Simplified is a derived approximation modeled from public depth data, available for nearly all lakes, so the underwater shape is an estimate. Advanced uses real measured charted surveys with the true lakebed shape, available for a set of major lakes that keeps growing.
