# MyLaserTools 2.4 release notes: Mixed-media layered maps, KerfScript, eight box generators, five maker generators and Blank Shapes

> Map Designer now brings laser-cut sheets, UV-printed artwork and 3D-printed relief together in one layered map. Print lake depths on a backplate, cut a wood or acrylic shore plate, add printed terrain and check how the pieces fit before you make them. Introducing KerfScript too, our own programming language for laser cutting: write a design as code in the new KerfScript Playground, drag the sliders your code creates and download SVG or DXF. Five generators join them: name toppers for pens and pencils, keyboard switch clickers, 3D printed photo frames, sports bag tags and a whole sheet of snowflake gift tags from a list of names. Eight box generators arrive too: a chest of drawers, an organizer with dividers, star, round, slip lid, slide and door boxes and a stairs display, each cut from flat sheets or downloaded as print-ready pieces. The Design Editor also has a new Blank Shapes drawer with 114 tags, labels, bookmarks, badges and more, sized in millimetres and added to your design as cut lines. The Bookmark Generator and the Christmas ornament can also put grain, halftone, brush or paper textures behind your design, for engraving or print and cut.

## New features

- **[Mixed-media layered maps](https://www.mylasertools.com/map-designer):** Choose a process for each map layer: laser cut, score, engrave, UV print or 3D print. Combine them in one project, from a printed lake on a wooden backplate to a raised terrain piece above a cut shore plate.
- **[Introducing KerfScript](https://www.mylasertools.com/kerfscript-playground):** KerfScript is a programming language made for laser cutting, and the new KerfScript Playground runs it right in your browser. Write a design as code or start from 24 examples, from a clock face and gift tags to a tilt maze and a slot-together sculpture. Comments in the code become sliders, kerf and finger joints are built in, and you download SVG or DXF with cut, score and engrave layers.
- **[Pen Topper Generator](https://www.mylasertools.com/pen-topper-generator):** Type a name and print a topper that grips a pencil, pen, marker, stylus, straw or cord. By default the barrel runs along the name, or the name can stand on top with a socket, a through hole or a collar. Paste up to 100 names and get them all on one plate.
- **[Clicker Generator](https://www.mylasertools.com/clicker-generator):** A clicky fidget built around a standard MX-style keyboard switch. Pick one of 12 shapes, put a symbol, a word, an SVG or a picture on the cap in a second colour, add a keychain loop and print the base and cap flat with no supports.
- **[3D Photo Frame Generator](https://www.mylasertools.com/3d-photo-frame-generator):** Pick the print you have, from Instax mini, square and wide to 4 x 6 in, 5 x 7 in, A6 and A5, and one of eight designs, including a song plaque. Add a few words as grooves or raised relief, then stand it on a base or feet, stick it to the fridge with magnets, hang it on the wall or from your keys.
- **[Sports Bag Tag Generator](https://www.mylasertools.com/sports-bag-tag-generator):** Bag tags shaped like ten balls, from a basketball and a baseball to a hockey puck and a rugby ball, each with its own seams, stitches or panels. The name sits on a banner and the jersey number in a badge, in two layers you glue together or as one piece.
- **[Sekka Zusetsu Snowflakes Gift Tag Generator](https://www.mylasertools.com/snowflake-gift-tag-generator):** Christmas gift tags with a snowflake breaking out over the edge, engraved whole while the tag grows around it with a small margin. Paste up to 30 names for a whole sheet and choose from 85 snowflakes, 77 of them restored from Sekka Zusetsu, the 1832 Japanese book of snow crystals, so every tag can be different.
- **[Blank Shapes in the Design Editor](https://www.mylasertools.com/design-editor):** Open Shapes, then Blank Shapes, and browse 114 blanks by category or search for one. Pick a blank, type its width and height in millimetres and add it to your design as a cut line. Holes and ribbon slots are measured in millimetres too, so they keep their size when the blank gets bigger.
- **[Engraved or printed backgrounds](https://www.mylasertools.com/bookmark-generator):** The Bookmark Generator and the Christmas ornament can lay a texture or pattern behind your design. Engraved, it becomes its own engrave layer and keeps a bare gap around your words so they stay readable. Printed, Download SVG gives one file with the print as an image, running a little past the cut line, and your text printed on top or left for the laser. On two and three layer ornaments the background sits on the backplate and shows through the frame's window.
- **[Drawer Chest Generator](https://www.mylasertools.com/drawer-box-generator):** A finger-jointed chest with one to six drawers. Each drawer is its own box, built a little smaller than its opening so it slides, with a round finger hole, a slot or a plain front. Cut it from one sheet, or print the chest and every drawer from the STL or 3MF.
- **[Divider Box Generator](https://www.mylasertools.com/divider-box-generator):** An organizer box where every row gets its own number of compartments. The dividers lock into the walls and into each other, or lift out as one insert, and a slip-over lid closes the box.
- **[Star Box Generator](https://www.mylasertools.com/star-box-generator):** A star box with 4 to 10 points. The wall bends around every tip and inner corner on living hinge cuts, its tabs lock into the base and the rim, and a lift-off lid sits on top.
- **[Door Box Generator](https://www.mylasertools.com/door-box-generator):** A box with two doors or a single lid that turns on pins cut from the lid itself, so there are no hinges to buy. Ears on the free edge hold it shut and double as finger grips.
- **[Round, slip lid, slide and stairs](https://www.mylasertools.com/round-box-generator):** The Round Box Generator drops flat staves into a slotted base and rim, the Slip Lid Box Generator makes gift boxes with a lift-off lid and an optional handle, the Slide Box Generator builds a sliding lid box or a matchbox, and the Stairs Display Generator makes tiered risers for collections and shop displays.

## Improvements

- **[See the whole assembly in 3D](https://www.mylasertools.com/map-designer):** Move the slider from assembled to exploded to see how the physical pieces fit. UV ink, score lines and engraving stay on their sheet, while a 3D-printed terrain group stays together as one piece. Numbered callouts match the layer list, where you can hide or reorder layers and whole terrain groups.
- **[Print-and-cut sheets and 3D files](https://www.mylasertools.com/map-designer):** Download one combined UV print image per sheet, with matching SVG cut and score lines and registration targets. The print-and-cut ZIP includes PNG, PDF and SVG artwork. Download STL or 3MF for the model geometry; 3MF keeps separate colour regions for multicolour printing.
- **[Wood, acrylic and printed colour](https://www.mylasertools.com/map-designer):** Pick one material colour for each cut sheet, or preview maple, cherry, walnut, oak, birch or pine with wood grain. UV and 3D print layers keep their artwork colours, including different road colours and elevation palettes.
- **A clearer layer list:** Colour swatches, process names and matching circle numbers make the build easier to follow. Bathymetry and topography stay grouped, and SVG previews omit the 3D callout numbers.
- **Controls that match the build:** Single-sheet and entirely 3D-printed maps show the assembled model without an unnecessary explode slider. Camera presets let you inspect the top, side or angled view.
- **[Vintage labels, frames and badges](https://www.mylasertools.com/design-editor):** Bracket, crest, ornate and art deco labels sit next to postage stamps, banners, starbursts, certificate seals, flowers and shields. Notched corners and scalloped edges are redrawn at every size instead of stretched, and a longer scalloped edge simply gets more scallops.
- **[Bookmarks with a bit more character](https://www.mylasertools.com/design-editor):** Gothic and onion arch tops, a crown, a swallowtail tail, art deco steps, scalloped and postage stamp edges, a pencil and an arrow. The page clip bookmark has a slit that slides over the page, with a small round end so the material does not split.
- **[Window tags for pictograms](https://www.mylasertools.com/design-editor):** Three tags have a window cut through the middle for a pictogram or an insert. Set the window size in millimetres to match it; the tag will not let the window run into the hanging hole or the edge.
- **[Award and sign stands that fit your material](https://www.mylasertools.com/design-editor):** Awards, place cards and standing signs come with a separate base. Enter your material thickness and the tab and slot are cut to match.
- **Inch or millimetre in every new generator:** Each of the five new generators has a units picker at the top of its settings, and every size field follows it.
- **Inspirational Palette on the new previews:** Try wood, leather, mirror, pastels and more on the 3D preview of each new generator. The 3MF download keeps the colours you picked.
- **[Grit & Texture patterns](https://www.mylasertools.com/pattern-generator):** A new Grit & Texture category in the pattern library has 26 seamless textures, among them film grain, spray mist, pencil shading, photocopy toner and crinkled paper. Use them as a fill in the Design Editor, where they are clipped grain by grain at the edge of your shape.
- **[Put the keychain hole anywhere around the outline](https://www.mylasertools.com/keychain-generator):** In the Keychain Generator, the Hat Keychain Generator and the 3D Printing Backpack Tag Generator, Hole Position now moves the hanging hole all the way around your name, starting at the top left. The ring stays attached to the edge wherever you put it, and the hole cannot grow so large that it breaks through the ring. Designs you saved earlier keep their hole where it was.
- **[Jump straight to your GPX route](https://www.mylasertools.com/map-designer):** Uploading a GPX or KML file in the Map Designer now moves the map to your route and fits it inside the export frame. Lost it later? Hover the route layer and click Zoom to route, or use the Zoom to route button next to the file. With the zoom locked, the map keeps its zoom and only centres on the route.

## Quick answers

### What's new in MyLaserTools 2.4?

Map Designer can now combine laser-cut sheets, UV-printed artwork and 3D-printed terrain in one layered map. Version 2.4 also adds eight box generators, from a chest of drawers and a divider organizer to star and door boxes, and five maker generators: pen toppers, keyboard switch clickers, 3D printed photo frames, sports bag tags for ten balls and snowflake gift tags. The Design Editor gains a Blank Shapes drawer with 114 blanks sized in millimetres. Also new: KerfScript, a programming language for laser cutting that you can try in the KerfScript Playground.

### What is KerfScript?

KerfScript is a small programming language for laser cutting, made by MyLaserTools. You describe a part with shapes and numbers, and it becomes a laser file with separate cut, score and engrave layers, kerf compensation and finger joints. Try it free in the KerfScript Playground: no install, your code stays in your browser, and the files you make are yours.

### Can I 3D print the new boxes?

Yes. Every box generator downloads STL and 3MF as assembled pieces ready to print: the box is one solid piece, and the lid, drawers, doors or divider insert print beside it, turned so they need no supports. Download SVG instead to cut the same box from flat sheets on a laser.

### Can I combine laser cutting, UV printing and 3D printing in one map?

Yes. Set the process for each layer in Map Designer and check the complete build in the 3D preview. For example, UV print lake depths on a backplate, laser cut a shore plate and add a 3D-printed terrain piece.

### Does every UV layer need a separate print?

No. UV layers on the same supporting sheet are combined into one print image. The artwork is clipped to the material that remains after the sheet is cut.

### Which files do I download?

Use the print-and-cut ZIP for each sheet’s print artwork and matching laser paths. Use STL for model geometry or 3MF to keep the model’s colour regions. Check the files in your laser software or slicer and assemble the finished pieces in the previewed order.

### Which balls can I make bag tags for?

Basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, football, volleyball, hockey (a puck), tennis, golf and rugby. Each one has its own markings and a size that suits a bag strap, and you can change the size, the colours and the frame.

### What switch does the clicker need?

Any MX-style mechanical keyboard switch with the common cross stem. The base holds it like a keyboard plate and the cap leaves the full key travel.

### How do I add a blank shape to my design?

In the Design Editor, open Shapes and choose Blank Shapes. Pick a category or search, click a blank, set the width, height and hole size, then click Add blank to design.

### Can I put a pictogram inside a tag?

Yes. Choose a window tag from the Tags category and set the window size to match your pictogram or insert. Add the tag, then place a symbol from the Symbols library inside the window.
